Crucial to my success on all three years of cleansing was getting the support of my husband, who also agreed to eat light and consume mostly soups, veggies, and light protein during my fast. I also asked my teammates at work to avoid offering or serving me food no matter what. Getting your family and friends on board is important because just the slightest bit of negativity or guilt can throw you off- track. Think “mind over matter.” I’ve found that while the body can adjust rather quickly to consuming just lemon juice for 1. For this, I summoned everything that I had learned from years of meditation practice, to condition myself that all my cravings were just all in my mind; that having a cleaner, lighter body was worth the sacrifice. I found that being able to say “no” to excellent food toughened my will, built discipline, and – I realized – helped build character. Pre- cleanse: The Ease- In. Day A: Gradually decrease your intake. Eat only raw fruits and vegetables, such as salads. Use only olive oil or vinaigrette for the dressing. Day B: Prepare your body for liquids. Drink juiced fruits and vegetables or fresh (not processed) broths and soups. Day C: Drink only freshly squeezed or fresh pressed orange juice. Fresh pressed lemon, pure maple syrup (grade B), cayenne pepper (approx. P3,6. 00 for 1. 0 days worth of ingredients). Add a dash of cayenne pepper, to taste. Store in a translucent or opaque tumbler or pitcher, away from direct sunlight. Nighttime tea or salt water flush. In order to complete your detoxification and rid your body of junk, take the laxative tea at night, preferably before 1. PM. It will usually take effect 6- 1. If you have an early day the morning after, take the tea early or skip it altogether. If you want really intense cleansing action, go for the salt water flush. You’ll find yourself thoroughly cleansing your system within 3. I cried the first time I did it; now I avoid this as much as I can and go with the tea instead.)Days 1 to 3: Bathroom buddy. If you’re going on the cleanse for the first time, you’ll find that Days 1 to 3 are the most intense; it’s best that you stay at home and make peace with your bathroom because you’ll be in it a lot. This is the time when your body starts releasing years worth of gunk and toxins, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself feeling light- headed and dizzy. If you feel like taking frequent naps, go ahead; this will also help take your mind off food and your bowels. That said, it’s always best to start the cleanse on a long weekend. Days 4 to 5: Energizer bunny. Once you get past Days 1 to 3, you’ll find that your body stabilizes a great deal on Day 4. Instead of feeling dizzy and light- headed, you’ll feel much lighter, much sharper, and with a lot more energy than you’re used to having. It was on these days when I found myself staying up until 2. AM, working, reading, and writing because my mind was abuzz with so much energy (I even placed a sketchpad beside my bed so I could capture my sleeping thoughts without getting up). This was probably because Day 6 coincided with our office’s out- of- town planning session, where there were buffet meals and plenty of snacks all throughout. I tried to avoid thinking about food by avoiding the dining area altogether, and I kept myself busy by working through mealtimes. Days 8- 1. 0: Light and breezy. The results of the cleanse were becoming visible by this time, and I was getting compliments for looking slimmer when it came to the face and legs (which, for me, are always the first to show signs of weight loss). The hunger pangs were gone, and I usually felt light and energetic throughout the day. Day 9 coincided with me having to conduct a workshop, and I found that my energy was high despite not having time to drink enough juice throughout the day. On Day 1. 0, however, I was feeling rather nostalgic about the entire process and was anxious about having to plan what to eat again. The Ease- Out. The Ease- Out prepares your body to start consuming food again. Don’t rush yourself, and eat in small quantities so as not to shock your system. I got too excited on Day 2 of the Ease- Out this time around, and I ended up feeling sick and nauseous the entire afternoon. Day A: Drink only freshly squeezed or fresh pressed orange juice. Use only olive oil or vinaigrette for the dressing. HYDRATE. If you're attempting the cleanse, make sure to drink plenty of water. The results. After the entire 1. I found that I had lost at least 2 inches on the waist and lower abdomen, around an inch on the upper arm area, and a bit of the flesh on the cheeks and chin. My thighs and legs were also visibly smaller, and my face was starting to look oval again. I avoided weighing in and out this time around, in order to not obsess about the numbers, but I found myself being able to wear clothes that would not have fit me just a month ago. I also got my period on the first week of the cleanse, but I surprisingly had zero PMS—no cravings, no menstrual cramps, no bruises on my upper arms and thighs. Aside from the apparent loss of weight and inches, the cleanse did make me feel a whole lot cleaner and more balanced inside and out. More importantly, going on the Master Cleanse taught me that I had become too much of an emotional eater, and that I don’t need to use food in order to respond to stress and mood swings. I learned that I can use the strength of will and discipline to say “no” to things that aren’t healthy for me, and that it doesn’t take much for me to truly be in touch with my body and with myself. The entire process taught me to be more mindful, to be more focused, and to take better care of my body, mind, and spirit. What now? I still have a long way to go before I regain full health and wellness; I’ve had an ongoing battle with weight since my teens and have been yo- yoing wildly through the years. My most recent Master Cleanse experience, however, has inspired me to take control of what I eat and how I prepare my food, especially now that I’m in my 3. I know that I could have learned all these without going through a 1. To me, however, the cleanse is more than just a diet fad or a weight loss tactic; it’s as spiritual, as meditative, and as physically engaging as doing yoga or preparing for a marathon. To me, this is a mind- body exercise that detoxifies me physically while giving me the chance to think about other things that I need to purge from my life. TORQUE CONVERTER DRIVEAs we saw in our first installment, the original Hydra- Matic, introduced in late 1. By 1. 95. 2, General Motors’ Detroit Transmission Division had produced more than 2 million Hydra- Matics, which were used by Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Pontiac, and a variety of outside automakers, ranging from Kaiser- Frazer to Muntz. Hydra- Matic was standard on all Cadillacs by the early fifties and went into most Oldsmobiles and more than 8. Pontiacs. Notably absent from the list of Hydra- Matic users were GM’s other automotive divisions, Buick and Chevrolet. Instead, between 1. Hydra- Matic or its successors, which we’ll discuss in more detail later in this article. At almost any other automaker, then or now, Hydra- Matic (in various light- , medium- , and heavy- duty versions) would have been the automatic transmission until being phased out in favor of something newer and/or better. Even more surprising is the fact that the original impetus for Buick and Chevrolet’s unique automatic transmissions came not from the engineering staffs of those divisions (which in that era still enjoyed considerable autonomy), but rather from one of the principal architects of Hydra- Matic. Engineer Oliver K. Kelley (often known as “O. K.” Kelley) began his career as an engineer at Cadillac in the late twenties and later worked for GM’s Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing subsidiary before joining Earl Thompson’s transmission development group, which by then had become part of the central Engineering Staff. Although Hydra- Matic was a team effort building on ideas Thompson had been developing since 1. Hydra- Matic transmission were actually in Kelley’s name. When preproduction of the initial Model 1. Hydra- Matic began in mid- 1. Kelley was among the corporate engineers reassigned to Detroit Transmission Division (of which Kelley’s colleague William L. Carnegie became the first chief engineer) to oversee the transition from prototype to mass production. We may presume, therefore, that Kelley was as familiar as anyone was with the original’s Hydra- Matic’s strengths and various limitations. As we’ve previously discussed, Hydra- Matic was very clever in many respects, but it was by no means a light, compact, or mechanically elegant design and it can’t have been cheap to manufacture. Furthermore, its operation was far from seamless even under the best of conditions, something that would earn the transmission considerable criticism in the years to come. There was obvious room for improvement. Nonetheless, considering how much money GM had invested in the project, proposing, as Kelley and his colleague George R. Smith did in the summer of 1. Hydra- Matic had not yet gone on sale. The most compelling point of Kelley and Smith’s argument, and the likely reason their proposal was not dismissed out of hand, was Hydra- Matic’s substantial production costs. While those might be acceptable for the senior divisions, which could pass the cost along to the customer, Hydra- Matic was expensive enough to be a dicey proposition for Chevrolet. Chevrolet owners were as weary as anyone of shifting gears (as evidenced by Chevrolet’s decision to make a vacuum- assisted shift linkage standard equipment for 1. Chevy would be willing or able to spend $1. The demand was there, but to tap it, Chevrolet would need an automatic transmission that could be priced to sell. We don’t know what higher- level discussions Kelley and Smith’s proposal may have prompted, but the gist is not hard to guess. Even during the Depression, Chevrolet’s total sales volume had only once fallen below 4. If Chevrolet could offer an automatic affordable enough to achieve a take- up of 5. Since very few American drivers liked to shift, offering such a transmission would also give buyers a compelling reason to choose Chevrolet over low- priced rivals, so Chevrolet might even stand to increase its market share. With numbers like that, developing an automatic transmission for Chevrolet was likely to be a worthwhile investment even if it didn’t share a single bolt with Hydra- Matic. In the summer of 1. Hydra- Matic was winding down, they were transferred to the Engineering Staff as part of a reorganized transmission research team (known in contemporary GM vernacular as a product study group). This worked out particularly well for Kelley. Not only was he once again doing advanced research work — which we have to assume was vastly more interesting than production engineering — he was now leading the team, Earl Thompson having left General Motors about three months earlier. The initial focus of Kelley’s new group was on torque converters. As Kelley was undoubtedly aware, some Yellow Truck & Coach buses had recently begun offering a Spicer torque converter transmission, a licensed derivative of the Lysholm- Smith unit developed by engineer Alf Lysholm of the Swedish firm Ljungstroms Angturbin AB. Over the previous decade, that transmission and others like it had become increasingly common for bus and railroad use, although to our knowledge, there had not yet been any production automotive applications. Some prewar torque converter bus transmissions used lockup clutches, as did Packard’s postwar Ultramatic and some early Borg- Warner automatics, but lockup converters were not common on automotive transmissions until the late seventies. Such transmissions were capable of providing torque multiplication comparable to Hydra- Matic with no perceptible steps and no need for a complicated hydraulic control mechanism, making them a potentially attractive Hydra- Matic alternative for Chevrolet. Before Kelley and company had had the time for more than preliminary research, however, outside circumstances shifted their attention to a very different application. M1. 8 HELLCATIn June 1. Kelley’s new product study group, GM president William S. Knudsen was summoned to Washington, D. C., where he was asked to oversee the ramp- up of American military production. By then, Europe had been at war for months, a growing number of European nations had fallen to the Nazis, and Great Britain’s position was looking increasingly precarious. Knudsen’s assignment was to enlist domestic industry in the accelerating U. S. The idea of automatic transmissions for tanks may sound faintly ridiculous, but what is merely annoying in a car — e. While Cadillac would shortly adopt Hydra- Matic for use in light tanks (mated, as we explained in Part 1 of this article, to Cadillac V- 8 engines), Hydra- Matic had neither the torque multiplication nor the torque capacity needed for heavier AFVs. Kelley and his team responded to this request by devising a heavy- duty semiautomatic torque converter transmission that was subsequently produced by Allison (then a GM division) under the trade name Torqmatic. The original Torqmatic 9. T AFV transmission combined a six- element torque converter (a single impeller, three turbines, and two stators) with two hydraulically controlled planetary gearsets, providing three forward speeds and one reverse. The transmission still had to be shifted manually, but there was no need to de- clutch and little danger of missing a shift. Moreover, the torque converter alone provided a stall ratio of 4.
